[Character information]
Name: Henchman 24
Canon: The Venture Bros.
Canon Point: Moments before his death at the end of Season 3
Age: 39
Appearance: Most of the time, 24 is part of the faceless butterfly horde, wearing a black-and-yellow jumpsuit, hood, mask and wings. Even then he stands out with his tall, lanky build and his vocal similarity to Ray Romano. Outside of the costume, he looks his age and his most distinguishing characteristic is a unibrown. This wiki entry features several pictures of him.
Inventory: Nothing but the clothes on his back, although he's wearing his henchman's uniform, so they're not the most conventional of clothes. The attached wings do work to make the henchmen fly, so I'm not sure if the powers that be would just remove whatever motors are involved or actually pull the wings off completely.
Abilities: Up until his final unfortunate accident, one of 24's greatest strengths was his luck. In a scene where Dr. Girlfriend asks The Monarch why he always sends 21 and 24 on missions, he says they have "that rare blend of expendable and invulnerable that makes for a perfect henchman." On mission after mission, as waves of minions die around him, 24 emerges (relatively) unscathed.
He also has some general combat and infiltration skills from his time as a henchman.
History: 24 at the Venture Fans wiki, a more comprehensive history buried in a general Monarch Henchmen article on another fan wiki, and the series on Wikipedia for a general overview of the show/world
Personality: 24 comes from a world where villainy is highly regulated, so although he is a supervillain's minion, he is not an outright evil person. There are certainly moral shades of gray involved in being so willing to go into battle and attempt to kidnap or kill assorted members of the Venture family, but it’s all following orders. It may also help that he rises to the general level of incompetence of everyone in the Monarch’s organization, leaving him relatively harmless as far as men doing a crazy man’s bidding go.
He can be very loyal. Becoming a henchman was a career of last resort after he lost his job at the mill and couldn’t find other employment with only a G.E.D. However, he has shown great devotion to the job. He worked first under The Phantom Limb and then joined The Monarch. Henching apparently suited him because he has been doing it ever since.
However, his devotion to the job can also be a weakness. Without henching, 24 doesn't know what to do with himself; it defines him too completely. Even when The Monarch is serving a jail sentence, he has to attend Henchmen's Anonymous meetings to figure out what to do with his life and jumps at the first chance to get back into the lifestyle when he meets up with 21. It also has to be said that the ability to follow a megalomaniac is not something to proudly display on your resume. War tribunals are held for guys who were "just following orders".
24’s loyal nature doesn’t only apply to his work. He also sticks with 21, even though he’s the type of know-it-all nerd people easily get sick of. It doesn’t end when the costumes come off. When he’s reunited with him at that Henchmen’s Anonymous meeting, 24’s excitement is obvious.
Speaking of 21, 24 is rarely seen far from him, and in fact seems like someone who would probably be overlooked beyond being "that guy who sounds like Ray Romano" if he didn't associate with his henchfriend. He will have extensive arguments with him about The Dumbest Things™. The most classic 21 and 24 argument is the one in which they debate whether Smurfs lay eggs. Armchair philosopher? As geeky as 21 in his own way even if he doesn’t have the podcasts to prove it? Desperate to fill downtime in the cocoon? Probably a little of all three. Sometimes he can be the voice of reason, though, such as when he told 21 that his fake battle damage looked like he had smeared Doritos on his face – which is exactly what he had done.
He tends towards sarcastic commentary. When 21 barges into his room without knocking, 24’s reaction is, “Ah, don't knock or anything. It's not like I live with 80 guys and no women, so there's no chance I'm masturbating!” He is more likely to face jamjar living with a steady stream of slightly cynical conversation than lead the escape forces.
Despite being a devoted soldier, 24 is not very good at his job. He wasn’t alone in his ignorance, but he didn’t realize that the wings on his costume were operable until Brock Samson took command of the henchmen in the middle of a crisis. Another henchman paired with 21 and 24 for a mission constantly showed them up by knowing more about mission codes and maneuvers than they did. In the mistake that led to his death, he was hiding - along with 21 - in the Monarch-mobile to avoid joining in a fight.
